Welcome to Miyazaki Prefecture! Located in the southeastern area of Kyushu, Miyazaki is mountainous with forest occupying 75.7% of the land. As a result, Miyazaki is a renowned haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts. It is also home to incredible seaside shrines such as Miyazaki Shrines, Amanoiwato Shrine, and Takachiho Shrine—all three are associated with the myth of Japan’s birth. Rivaling Okinawa as the tropical paradise, Miyazaki is blessed with most hours of sunshine in Japan. Miyazaki offers all from beautiful mountainous, mild climate, coastal scenery to iconic waterfall—Takachiho Gorge. Miyazaki is accessible by plane or Shinkansen from major cities.

Different regions have their own traditional recipes and agricultural farming system. Many of the regional dishes can only be tasted in the original area they came from.

Chicken Nanban

The name of this dish comes from nanbanzuke (deep-fried fish marinated in sweet vinegar sauce). First originated in Miyazaki in the 1960s, chicken nanban consists of deep-fried chicken thighs, seasoned with a sweet vinegar glaze, then topped with tartar sauce (that is comprised of mayonnaise and diced onions). It is light and easy due to the sweetness of the sauce.

Hyuganatsu

Hyuganatsu orange, found only in Miyazaki, is a juicy citrus fruit with a thick, soft skin. It is sprinkled with sugar and eaten with the pith intact. Unlike regular Japanese oranges, both the thick white inner skin and the fruit are edible. It has a bittersweet taste. Hyuganatsu ae used to make sorbets, ice cream, drinks, or dessert.

Miyazaki is Japan’s Queensland—the sunshine capital with a laid-back vibe and great surfing conditions. Miyazaki has great waves all year round with crowds evenly distributed amongst the spots which are broken into three geographical areas—Hyuga (north), Miyazaki City (center), Nichinan (south). All three areas offer fun waves for beginners and more challenging waves for skilled surfers.

Takachiho Boat

Takachiho Boat

One of the most popular activities in Takachiho is renting a rowing boat and experience the gorge from the water. The activity lasts for 30 minutes, costs JPY2,000, and accommodates 3 people. Viewing the stunning Manai Falls and wonderful rock formations on the steep gorge closely make this activity a truly memorable one.
